Site installations update

May 20th, 2008

In the last week I have installed Mediawiki and Moodle to join this Wordpress blog. I will be installing Elgg in due course when I have had a chance to see what version 1.0 looks like and how easy it is to install. If it looks a bit difficult or it is too soon I will consider Elgg Classic. The only other addition I might make is phpBB. There is an unused installation on terrywassall.co.uk along with Wordpress as a WCMS and Elgg 0.9 running the family connections blogs. Longer term plans may be to use Wordpress as a WCMS here. Even longer term may be to move Family Connections here and my main Wordpress blog, both at terrywassall.co.uk.

Uninstalled MODx

May 12th, 2008

Decided that MODx is a step too far for the moment. Not enought time to learn how to use it and is, in any case, overkill for what I currently need. I have installed Medai wiki at wiki.terrywassall.net and this blog at blog.terrywassall.net. I also have an unuse subdomain elgg.terrywassall.net. I think I may try Twiki as a wcms for this site but try an installation at terrywassall.co.uk first.

MODx cms

Have installed the OS web content managment system for terrywassall.net.  Quite easy as after install going to the site first time takes you into an install routine. had to set up the mysql db manually as it couldn’t do this. Also had to change chmod settings for asset folders and an install file. Finally had to create an empty config file.  The install process checks everything, lists what has failed with what to do and allows you to go back and/or retry. After installation, on first page edit, got a message telling me to make the config file read only and to delete the entire install folder. And that was it.

Looks much more complicated than using Wordpress as a cms but much more versatile. In fact has a blogging facility too.
